The city boasts more historic buildings than any other city in Texas, including the Federal Building, the Anderson County Jail, and the Ivanhoe Building, among others. The downtown buildings showcase early 19th century architecture and are filled with specialty shops, antique shops, and unique goods.

The Anderson County Jail is an interesting historical landmark. The imposing building dates from 1914 and is built in the Renaissance style. The courthouse features an impressive spiral staircase in the center of the building with a beautiful stained glass skylight at the bottom of the dome. The district courtroom is modern, but it also has a precisely painted mural at the rear of the two-story courtroom that features various elements of Texas history. The outdoor lounge is covered in memorabilia including historical photos, celebrity and political autographs, and newspaper clippings.

The Ivanhoe building was built in 1913 as the organizational meeting of the Knights of Pythias. The Order of the Knights of Pythias is an international, non-sectarian fraternal order established in 1864 in Washington, DC, by Justus H. Rathbone and was the first fraternal order constituted by an Act of Congress. The Fraternal Order of the Knights of Pythias and its members are dedicated to the cause of universal peace. The Pythians are committed to promoting understanding among men of good will as the surest means to achieve Universal Peace.
