Halloween is fast approaching. It’s the time when people of all ages plan and prepare their spookiest costume for a scare. Those who have a dog as a pet at home may have a hard time coming up with a concept that includes their pet. Well, worry not, as you can make use of the Winslow and Marmaduke family for a unified and legendary costume.
Pet lovers definitely know who Marmaduke is. He is a Great Dane who lives with the Winslow family and exhibits a typical trait among other dogs. It is actually a newspaper comic strip drawn by Brad Anderson from 1954 to the present with the help of Phil Leeming and later Dorothy Leeming. Anderson received the National Cartoonists Society’s Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award for the comic strip in 1978. A film adaptation of Marmaduke was released on June 4, 2010, where the Winslow family and their computer-animated dog moved from Kansas to California.
To make your dog like Marmaduke’s, make sure you have a red rubber tie around his neck. If your dog is a different color than Marmaduke (brown), you can dye it at a groomer if your budget allows. If you’re on a strict budget, you can layer it up and customize it. In fact, you can customize a design for your dog.
If you want your dog to be a super Marmaduke dog, you can put a red cape on it and print the word “Super Marmaduke” on the back to identify it as a new generation wonder dog. To be more creative and make your dog stand out this Halloween, you can cut out old and unused curtains or blankets (preferably a red one to make a little superman cape, otherwise any color would do).
First, draw your desired design for the coat on a piece of paper, and then measure the length of your dog. After measuring, trace on the old fabric (curtain or blanket) the design of your cape. Make sure the size is appropriate for your dog. Too long a cloak could swallow him up, preventing him from walking. Cut the design with an extra inch at its edge to provide a snug fit. Make sure you have a tie (length is in line with your dog’s neck circumference) attached to the cape so you can secure the cape around your dog’s neck.
Sew the edge so that it is neat. If you have extra fabric with a different color from the cape, you can cut out letters like “SM” for Super Marmaduke or the whole word. You can sew it to the back of the cape. You can add glitter or sequins to add glamor to your dog’s Marmaduke costume.
