There is a saying in the US that tells what year a woman graduated from high school by her makeup. Here in the UK the landmark may have a different name, college or university for example, but the message is the same. Every season you update your wardrobe to feel current and younger, but when was the last time you updated your makeup routine?

As you go from your mid-thirties to your forties and beyond, you need to adapt your makeup to suit your changing look. Using the right products will help you look younger; basically less is more!

You may feel confident wearing the same eye colors you’ve worn for years, but do they really work with your color now? As you age, your makeup should look more natural, so make sure you choose colors that enhance your eyes but don’t overwhelm them. Cream shadows are best avoided if your lids are prone to creasing, powder shadows are much easier to blend and look more subtle. The same principle applies to eyeliners, stick to soft pencils and stay away from strong liquid eyeliners. An eye primer is a must to keep your shadow in place all day.

Your mascara should also look natural, thick spider lashes are fun when you’re in your twenties, but they look coarse and overdone on mature faces. Find a shade that matches your coloration, blondes should wear brown or navy mascara, redheads should stick to browns, darker colors can wear black and brown.

Most women need a little color on their cheeks to make them look healthier and as we age it also gives a more youthful look. Cream blushes feel great on the skin and are easy to apply, but if you feel like they’re too bright for your look, apply a little sheer face powder on top. At 50 and 60 years of age, a matte blush is recommended so as not to look too bright.

When it comes to lips again, color and texture are key: you shouldn’t be wearing the same colors you were wearing when you were in your twenties. As the natural color of your lips begins to fade, you’ll need to have a couple of good cream lipsticks on hand in your best colors to give your face an immediate lift. For thinner lips, a lip gloss over lipstick or lipstick gives the effect of fuller lips. Using a lip primer will keep your lip color in place and make you look brighter all day.

When you’re familiar with a reliable makeup routine, it’s not easy to change without knowing what really suits you.
