There is nothing more extreme than the sport of skateboarding. Skateboarding began by simply nailing roller skate wheels to a wooden board and has since evolved into a global phenomenon and a recognized extreme sport. Skateboarding has been through a lot to get to where it is now, but that discussion is for another article. Here I want to talk about why skateboarding is so extreme and so popular. Skateboarding requires a type of athlete that very few other sports require. Balance, strength, intuition, guts, dexterity and a natural ability are just a small sample of what a person needs to become a great skater. Skateboarders today are arguably the most talented athletes in the world. When you compare the difficulty, danger, skill level, variety, and competition of the sport, it’s not hard to see why. There are also a number of paths that the sport of skateboarding has gone through that cemented it as an extreme sport, paths like the X Games and the Gravity Games.

When you think of an athlete, you usually think of a football, baseball, or basketball player. Maybe you think of a track and field athlete, swimmer, or tap dancer (just kidding). Before the recent skateboarding revolution in the 1990s and today, not many people would have included skateboarders in the athlete category; bully, troublemaker, talented or maybe skilled, but not athlete. But now when you compare the kinds of tricks skaters do and the amazing things they make their bodies do when they’re 15 feet in the air and then land softly only to hit another big air seconds after the “typical” stuff from the athletes. do, people are actually starting to say that figure skaters are possibly MORE athletic than what we know of as a “typical” athlete. After watching competitions like the X Games, I’m not one to argue that point. What professional skateboarders can do with a piece of wood on wheels is amazing.

The sheer danger and difficulty of skateboarding is enough to drive thousands of hopeful professional skateboarders away from the scene, but those pushing know what it took to get there. There aren’t too many other sports that draw comparisons of difficulty in skateboarding. Take this for example, he takes off and launches extremely fast in the air, while in the air, he turns his body, turns the board under his feet, grabs the board with his hand, puts the board back under his feet , land on the climb aboard and keep riding… oh, and do it all in style. It’s pretty amazing what skateboarders can do these days and it’s a lot of fun to watch. Fortunately, the mainstream has taken notice of this amazing sport and competitions like x games and gravity games now feature skateboarding as one of their main events. This gets the word out and shows the world that these guys are into the most extreme sport and deserve to be called world class athletes.
