I have noticed this question being asked at least once or twice a week on the popular PSP help forums, so I decided to post a tutorial on how to fix the “out of memory error” for your PSP. There also seems to be a lot of confusion as to the difference between your memory card and your PSP drive memory.
Curiously, this error has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the memory card you have on your PSP. In this case, memory refers to the amount of RAM, or random access memory, that the PSP has. Each PSP has 4 megabytes (MB) of fast DRAM, which is used for video or game resources, and 32 MB of built-in RAM, for system resources.
Unlike a computer, RAM is something that cannot be changed or upgraded for the PSP. If you get this error, you are left with these two options. If you have a lot of tabs open, try closing the ones you’re not using. The PSP may not be able to load what you want because it lacks resources. Reboot your system and try to run the desired file as soon as your PSP starts.
Again, this has nothing to do with the size of your memory card. Memory cards run out of storage space, not memory. The term memory should never be used when referring to the storage capacity of your memory card. The two have nothing in common. This statement is also valid for other devices, such as your PC. Your computer’s hard drive is not a memory, but a storage device.
