What is psoriasis?

The name Psoriasis comes from the Greek word ‘Psora’ which means ‘itching’, it is an inflammatory disorder of the skin in which roughness and redness appear in the affected areas, with fine silver scales. It is not a contagious or infectious disease, but a lifestyle-induced disease.

Causes; Symptoms; Remedies:

According to Ayurveda, impurities in the blood along with emotional factors are the main cause of the disease, it is also accepted that it has a genetic component. The disease first appears around the back of the elbow and the front of the knees as small pimples, each covered with a white layer of scales, which enlarge into patches. It occurs due to the imbalance of vata and kapha dosha. Irregular eating habits, consumption of incompatible foods, salty products; alcohol, tobacco, etc. they can also activate the disease. Ayurvedic psoriasis treatment uses a three-pronged approach targeting ahara (diet), vihara (lifestyle), and aushada (medications).

Ayurveda suggests certain pros and cons for psoriasis:

1) Reduce stress levels and keep calm levels. Practice Pranayama, breathing and mental exercises have time and again proven their success in treating almost all types of chronic skin disorders.

2) Do not poke, peel, scrape or rub the towel vigorously on the skin. Avoid soap or other irritating cleaning measures; Generously apply the herbal balm to the affected areas after drying the skin.

3) Wear cotton clothing. Never tend to control natural urges like urinating, defecating, burping, farting, etc.

4) Avoid cold water bath immediately after strenuous exercise, brisk walk, etc.

5) Eat easily digestible foods. The diet must be strictly vegetarian and yogurt; Chili peppers, black chickpea, and excessive salt intake should be avoided. Chilled and cold foods should also be avoided.

Psoriasis is a non-contiguous inflammatory skin disorder in which it appears roughness and redness with fine silver scales. Psoriasis can be thought of as an imbalance of the Vata and Kapha doshas. Irregular eating habits, consumption of foods that cannot be eaten together (eg: dairy products with fish), excessive intake of yogurt, black sheep, shellfish, salty products, alcohol and tobacco are some things that can enhance this disease.

Some Ayurvedic medicines and remedies are:

1) Guggul is an Ayurvedic herb made from a resin from a small tree, which grows in North West India, it is useful in treating psoriasis. It has anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering actions, helps to remove fat, excess fluids from the body, and penetrates deep into tissues. An effective Kapha and Vata pacifying supplement.

2) Psoraban, an Ayurvedic product, is a liquid mixture made from herbs and plants that have unique properties to overcome all types of psoriasis.

3) Neem is one of the best blood purifiers and detoxifiers known to Ayurveda. It improves the immune system and neem oil is an antiseptic in itself. The leaf extracts are used in antiseptics and can be used effectively in the treatment of psoriasis. It destroys fungi and bacteria and is best for almost all types of skin conditions, including red and itchy skin.

4) An extract of Margosa leaves with extract of cow dung and cow urine may feel repulsive, due to the ingredients and also the stench, but the bottom line is that it works quite effectively.

5) To mention some elements of daily use recommended by Ayurveda are: green leafy cabbage, bitter gourd juice, sesame seeds, lecithin seeds, foods rich in vitamin E.

Apart from medications, diet control, a controlled lifestyle, and yoga go a long way towards obtaining the best results from Ayurveda for psoriasis treatment.
