God is still a God who is involved with his children here on earth. God was busy with his people, Israel, all the time. When they strayed from their course, He slowly but surely steered them back in the right direction.

God himself spoke to his children, but he also often used angels to carry messages to people on their behalf: 2 If the ancient message delivered by angels was valid and no one got away with it, do you think we can risk neglecting this latest message, this magnificent salvation?

There are many examples of angels in the Old Testament. God gave Moses the ten commandments and an angel to protect him all the way and guide him in the right direction. When Joshua replaced Moses, the angels also helped him enter the promised land.

The angel helped Hagar get back to the woman she had worked for so that God’s plans could work out. Two angels warned Lot about God’s plan to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Angels visited Isaac and Jacob, as well as the great prophets, Elijah and Elisha. And there are many more examples.

Angels were the spokesmen for God in the Old Testament. They communicated God’s wisdom and truth to his people. If people didn’t do what the angels said, there were big repercussions. Often people suffered because of their disobedience. Often people were left to their own devices and allowed to suffer the consequences of their actions.

Today, angels still act as God’s messengers, but we are also extremely privileged to have the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not come and go, but is with us all the time.

With every decision we make, however small, we can ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. The problem is that we make so little space for him in our lives that we don’t recognize his voice.

There are so many voices in our heads. The voice of finance that tends to speak louder and push harder. It may be the voice of your work and the concern of whether you will still have a job tomorrow. Maybe it’s your health that screams the loudest. Or is it the deafening silence of not fitting in anywhere?

I also struggle to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit through all the voices that are screaming out loud. But it is my responsibility to shut up and silence all the other voices in my head. Then I will be able to hear the still voice of the Holy Spirit. Then I will hear what choice I must make. Then it will be easier to live within God’s guidelines.

God still speaks to us today. God also speaks in different ways. He speaks through our circumstances, through his Word, and through our hearts. God also speaks to us through other people, and also through our dreams and thoughts.

Take care to listen…

Holy Scripture
Hebrews 2:1-4

Reflection
Can you hear God speak?
Are you quiet enough?
What do you need to do differently?

Prayer
Father, thank you for continuing to speak today. I realize that I must become quieter to hear your whisper. Please lead me on the right path. In the name of Jesus, amen.
