‘Dracula’, one of the most famous novels ever written, was produced as a film in 1931. The film itself gained much fame until Frankenstein eclipsed it. However, there are significant differences between the characters in the film with the original novel.

The main character, Count Dracula, remains the same. Bela Lugosi plays the part and she does a great job.

Mina Murray from the novel becomes Mina Seward. And poor Dr. John Seward, Lucy’s failed suitor in the original novel, now becomes Mina’s father. And voila, Lucy is still friends with Mina.

Jonathan Harker, Mina’s fiancé in the novel, remains the same in the film.

Renefield from the film is significantly different from Renefield from the novel. In the novel, Renefiled is simply another patient in Dr. Seward’s asylum. He eats and kills creepy creatures. And he is Dracula inside Dr. Seward’s asylum accepting Dracula’s baits. However, in the movie, he is almost a servant of Dracula. He does some of Dracula’s lease papers, he sends them to Transylvania, Draula bites him and that gives him the power to bite and drink other people’s blood. And he eventually bites a real woman before Dracula beats him to death for taking Jonathan and Van Helsing to where he lived (hiding).

Van Helsing is similar in the novel and the movie. He is still the kind and caring person.

And then there is Martín, the one in charge of taking care of Renefield. He provides a comedic angle in the movie and appears in some of the most interesting scenes.
