Introduction to isolation transformer

Isolation transformers are made up of copper wires that are wound around each other to feed the power supply. The main function of the transformer is to isolate circuits from an alternating source. It separates two circuits with the help of the induction loop or by lowering the AC voltage. Device benefits are available when installed in a 1:1 ratio.

Advantages of using an isolation transformer:-

  • Isolation transformers have the power to control the alternating current within the device. In other words, you can increase or decrease the alternating current.
  • The primary and secondary coils can be assembled as a step-up or step-up transformer to balance voltage current in electrical devices.
  • Based on the turns count in the coil, the device can handle a large amount of voltage current.
  • Decreases electromagnetic or electrical interruptions from the power supply while improving signal strength in radio and wireless communication systems.
  • It can prevent appliances and machines against peaks and harmonics of the main power supply.
  • There is no connection between ground and the exposed part of the circuit. With the isolation transformer, there is no danger of touching life while the body is grounded, which means the transformer prevents the flow of electric current that shocks man and machine.

An autotransformer is a construction where the primary and secondary windings are connected to share a common winding. The secondary voltage coil will always have a common terminal with the primary coil. The step-up and step-up transformer configuration of the voltage current can be achieved with a touch of the coil measuring from the end of the junction.

Advantages of using an autotransformer:-

  • The features listed below are typically for a device with a voltage ratio ranging up to 3:1 voltage or 1:3 voltages. If the range is exceeded, an isolation transformer is typically more cost effective.
  • Autotransformers are less expensive compared to the latter.
  • This type of transformer is smaller in physical size and is much lighter in weight because it needs fewer turns and a small core.

restrictions

  • A fault in the autotransformer winding insulation will result in full input voltage being applied to the output.
  • There is no insulation within the primary and secondary coil and the protection of the devices depends on the main supply.
