The Canaan Dog is a stocky breed of medium size and square proportions that originated in Israel. As a natural herder, this breed has a typical pariah dog exterior. The average weight of this robust spitz-type breed is 45 to 55 pounds for males and 35 to 45 pounds for females; their average height ranges from 20 to 24 inches for males and 35 to 45 inches for females.
Coat
The Canaan Dog is a double-coated breed with a straight upper coat no more than 2 inches long. Its undercoat is thick and can withstand extreme changes in temperature. Their coat comes in two patterns such as: pureed white and densely colored with or without the white border. Solid colors vary from black, red, liver, sand, and all shades of brown.
Activity
The Canaan Dog is a working breed that does not like to sit. They require a lot of mental and physical exercise, including long daily walks or daily jogs with herding activities, vigorous play sessions along with exciting training sessions.
Temperament
Canaan dogs are resourceful, intelligent, and highly trainable. They are capable of surviving on their own, and even try to do so when faced with substantial change, such as different people or a home. This breed does not adapt well to sudden changes, so a securely fenced home with its play area is necessary. A natural watchdog, this breed is highly protective and has the courage to fight back when threatened. They are very wary of strangers; children and animals included, but they are very devoted to families and friends.

Bred to herd and act as guards for the Israelites, the Canaan Dog is an ancient breed that originated in the Middle East as far back as 2200 B.C. C. They were used during World War II to track, protect and patrol, until now.
Watch out
The Canaan Hound is generally a clean breed. They need regular brushing and bathing only when absolutely necessary. Fingernails and mustaches should be trimmed and ears cleaned. This breed is prone to eye problems, hypothyroidism, hip and elbow dysplasia, and patellar dislocation.
Training
The Canaan Hound is highly intelligent and trainable. They are very eager to learn the new tasks they are taught and are quick to pick up new tricks and feats. Authority must first be established before training this breed, as they will naturally follow the lead of the person they consider their leader.
Like many highly intelligent breeds, they tend to get bored if repetitive training methods are used. It is important to use other techniques or move on to new tricks if behavior changes occur.
Canaan Dog is known to be manipulative and will try to run away from anything he doesn’t want to do. Constant training is the key to the characteristic of this breed.
