Preparing to buy your first pistol can be quite overwhelming. They are not cheap. The new pistols range in price from $ 250.00 to $ 2,500.00. And to further complicate matters, there are many different manufacturers and options. I tell people in my carriage permit course that there are as many different types of pistols as manufacturers can convince people to buy. What is probably most confusing for someone new to this field is the fact that for every brand and model of firearm, there are 3 gun magazine writers who tell their readers that their particular brand, caliber, or contraption is the best, and 4 others that say the weapon in question will make the reader kill.

Yesterday I was asked my opinion on Glocks. I said what I thought didn’t matter; it wasn’t my money or my safety that was at stake. My preference does not matter in the decision to buy your weapon. My wife likes Glocks; I feel the same about revolvers. Our different preferences As long as you know your weapon, why you chose it, and it fits your needs, then it is the best weapon for you. Now with that being said, let’s take a look at the benefits and drawbacks of the two main types of pistols, semi-automatic and revolvers.

Revolvers are a type of pistol that has a rotating cylinder that contains several firing chambers. They usually have 5 or 6 rounds, each in its own firing chamber. They are generally cheaper to buy than a semi-automatic, and a new one from a major manufacturer like Taurus or Rossi costs around $ 250.00. The main benefits of this type of gun include:

They are easier to learn to manipulate, because there are generally fewer functions than a typical semiautomatic.

They are usually easier for weaker people to operate. This is due to the lack of a slide.

They are generally more reliable.

There are more ammo options.

Revolvers are not as training intensive as a semiautomatic pistol (more on this later).

I prefer revolvers for home defense as a home protection gun will be stored loaded for an extended period of time. This is because they have fewer moving parts, which in turn makes them less sensitive to lack of cleaning and maintenance than semi-automatic ones. I also recommend them for someone who is not going to train at the recommended intensity because this type of gun has fewer functions to remember. To manipulate a revolver, one only has to pull the trigger and release the cylinder, whereas a semi-automatic pistol generally has a trigger, magazine, slide lock, and at least one safety lever.

Revolvers have disadvantages, and it is because of these disadvantages that police departments throughout the county have switched from them to semi-automatic. These disadvantages must be understood if the reader wishes to make a decision; therefore I will list them:

Revolvers are slower to reload than typical semi-automatic ones. They are sometimes more difficult to hide due to the width of the cylinder. Revolvers typically don’t hold as many rounds (5-6 rds compared to 8 or 10 rds on a semiautomatic.

Because a revolver contains separate chambers for each round, to fully load a revolver, the operator must place one round in each chamber (6 actions for 6 rounds). To fully load a semiautomatic, the operator must insert a single magazine into the pistol (one action for multiple rounds).

Semi-automatic pistols fire a single cartridge each time the trigger is pressed. Automatically removes the spent casing and prepares to fire another round. A semi-automatic is sometimes called an automatic, but the difference is that a true automatic can fire multiple rounds for each pull of the trigger. This seemingly small difference can result in tens of thousands of dollars in fines and years of time in federal prisons, so make sure you know the difference. A semi-auto keeps its rounds in a single device called a magazine (it is possible to offend some hardline gun enthusiasts by calling a magazine a clip). This magazine is normally inserted into the pistol grip. These pistols are the most popular and they are for many reasons. Some of the most recognized reasons are:

Semi-cars can hold many rounds compared to a revolver. Typically, a semi-automatic charger has a capacity of 8 to 10 rds, but there are chargers that can hold 15 to 30. They allow for faster recharges. Due to the popularity, there is a wider selection of accessories such as covers available. They are easier to conceal due to their finer action than a normal revolver. It’s easy to carry spare ammo via pre-loaded magazines.

This is due to the number of bullets that are easily carried in the magazines on one’s body and the number of bullets in the pistol that made the semiautomatic replace the revolver in our nation’s police setup. What has kept it there are the different functions that are possible in a semiautomatic. A police force or a private user can decide the type of safety devices or modes of operation they want in a firearm and buy a brand that has those characteristics. While this is a benefit, it can also become a drawback. The reasons for this are:

They are very training intensive. Before one begins to carry a semiautomatic for self defense, it is recommended that the user fire 2 to 3,000 rounds of the type of ammunition they intend to carry in their firearm in order to fully understand the function of their firearm. Semi-cars are more complex. This means more prone to failure. While modern firearms and ammunition can fire thousands of rounds without malfunction, it can and does happen. They are more expensive than a revolver.

Shooting them can be more difficult for people with arthritis or weaker stature to manipulate the slip. This type of pistol is more sensitive to the type of ammunition. Some types of semi-autos are more prone to jamming with certain types of ammunition, which is another reason why it is suggested to train with the type of ammunition you intend to carry.

The semi-automatic type of weapon is very well represented in the world of weapons. Due to this sales popularity, there are many different functions and features. Comparing this is like comparing trucks with cars. There are many brands of pickup trucks (revolvers), but in general they are all basically the same. In the world of automobiles (semi-cars), they have sedans, sports cars, wagons, convertibles, limousines, economy class, and luxury designs. You may buy a vehicle or firearm based solely on an arbitrary reason, such as looks, popularity, or what an ad in a gun magazine tells you. You can also buy a tool like this by deciding your needs and weighing your options.
