A towing company is a simple concept. The primary purpose of a towing company is to move disabled vehicles at the request of their owners or a property owner/manager. In urban areas or apartment complexes, towing companies operate to control illegal parking by property owners who do not follow posted regulations or parking rules. In these cases, the areas in question have limited parking space and reserve the right to allow people to park only if they pay for a space or allow people to park in the spaces at certain times. If any of these rules are violated, the owner has the right to have the vehicles towed off the premises. In these cases, the owner has previously contracted with a towing company to service their lots. The property owner will provide signs to customers on how to retain their vehicles once they have been towed.

Trailer yards are fortified prisons for vehicles. Yards are typically fenced off with bob wire surrounding the property, discouraging vehicle owners from jumping over the fence to retrieve their car. The courtyards also employ state-of-the-art video surveillance and automatic fencing to protect against intruders. At night, guard dogs are released to further deter marauders from setting foot on the courtyard premises. Retrieving your car from these yards involves paying a fee. These fees can be quite expensive and typically range from $50 to $100 to $200. It also depends on the number of days the towing company has your vehicle at their facility. Most shipyards charge a storage fee per day. This could be another $20 to $50 dollars per day. After a while, the fee can become very expensive. If the car is never recovered, the tow company places a bond on the vehicle at the Department of Motor Vehicles. If the lien is not paid, the towing company will file suit in the local courts to obtain ownership of the vehicle. Once ownership is obtained, the cars are auctioned or scrapped for parts.

Emergency services are another way that towing companies work. If your vehicle breaks down on the road and you do not have the means to remove it or are simply too disoriented to solve the towing problem, the emergency services will have the car towed for you. Towing company owners hire operations like triple A and law enforcement organizations to get disabled vehicles off the road. Triple A is an organization in which participants pay an annual access fee to gain access to emergency vehicle services. In times of need, this organization is very helpful.

City Parking – In large cities, the parking authority division employs various tow trucks to enforce parking laws enacted within the city limits. These can be as simple as not paying a toll or parking ticket and parking in a no-parking zone. The parking authority will choose to tow your vehicle in exchange for the right to make you pay your fines to get your vehicle back. If the ticket is not paid, the towed vehicle will be sold at auction.
